Chapter Ten

Ava

“Good... boy?”

Bark.

“Are you a real dog? Like an earth dog, or...?”

Maybe I hit my head when I fell into the pit. That would explain all of this. The animal continues to bark happily at me, sounding just like a dog-dog that’s overly excited to see me. It bounces on its front paws, backs up, and then eagerly looks down the hole as if expecting me to just pop out.

Maybe this is one of Hunam’s tricks, and it’s not a dog at all, but a vicious predator in disguise. Once I get to the surface, it’ll morph into its true form and rip me limb from limb. It disappears and comes back with something in its mouth, rolls it around in its jaws and then plops it down the hole.

A rock. The dog brought me a rock. I pick it up and the dog barks excitedly.

“You want me to throw your rock?”

The dog backs up, then peeks back down. I throw the rock. The dog brings it right back. This... is insane.

The rock plops back inside the hole. I frown. This isn’t the one I threw. This one is flat with a pointed edge, kind of like a spade.

“Ava! Can you hear me?”

“Khryz!”

“Wait! Hold very still.”

I do, suddenly very concerned. “Can you see my surroundings now?” I ask quietly. Some mud has fallen off my skin, so it probably fell from the collar, too.

“Yes. Be wary of that creature. The Intekkix have been hunting it for many rotations. They say it’s a dangerous animal mistakenly brought from earth.”

“Dangerous, huh?” I can’t keep the amusement from my voice. “I mean, the tail wagging can get a little aggressive. And the face licking. If you’re not careful, you might get your ass sniffed.”

“I sense that you are teasing with me.”

“I am. It’s a dog, a canine. Humans call them, ‘man’s best friend’ because just about every human on the planet has one for a pet. Dogs are... dogs. Fun loving, loyal, ravenous, smelly balls of fur with a butt licking problem.”

“It will eat you.”

“Doubt it.

There’s a pause and I worry that I’ve lost him. His voice comes back in broken transmission.

“Ava, there is something I need to tell you.”

Our communications go dead again. Great.

Flipping the spade rock over in my hand, I jam the pointed edge into the dirt wall. It slices easily. Too easily, almost. Dirt slides away from the tip as I dig foot slots into the wall. Sliding my left foot into the slot, I dig my toes into the dirt and lift my weight on my foot to test it. The soil gives way and crumbles. Shit! I try another section of the wall; dig deeper. I slide my foot in and jump up with all my weight. It holds, so I dig another set and a slot for my hand, then another until I can’t reach any higher. Keeping my injured arm tightly against my chest, I climb. The slots shift and crumble, but they don’t give way.
